A ghostwriter is a professional writer paid to write content credited to another person. It may involve writing books, stories, reports or articles. Executives, celebrities or political leaders mostly hire ghostwriters to draft and edit magazine articles, autobiographies or other content. Their services are also required when it comes to writing musical pieces or film composition. Sometimes, a publisher or an author may acknowledge the contribution of the writer in the content.
The work of a ghostwriter varies largely. In some cases, he may be hired to edit and polish a manuscript or a draft. In such cases, he does not need to incorporate his ideas since he has the outline already laid out. The author may have written most of the details and laid the groundwork. In other cases, the writer may have only come up with a title and a theme. This would require him to use his own concepts and storylines. If the author has provided these details, then the article writer is expected to write based on that. Most of the times however, the credited author will have jotted down the basic framework of ideas to be developed and given instructions on how to develop the material.
In case of an autobiography, the ghostwriter is expected to interview the author, his or her colleagues, family members and other people that may give the needed information. Ghostwriters may spend several months researching, writing or editing a client’s work. Their pay rate may vary, either per page, a flat fee or a percentage of sales royalties. He may even be paid based on a combination of the above methods. In case of a book, authors generally pay the writer a flat rate. Anything between $12,000 and $30,000 is a good deal for most writers. In case of technical articles, the article writer may charge per word, depending on the complexity of the article.
Many countries have established a minimum fee that article writers or ghostwriters are to be paid. As a result, many publishers have outsourced their work to offshore locations like India where they can save up to 80% of the total cost of writing. Fiction publishers employ ghostwriters on a wide scale. They can be used to increase the number of books published by a particular author or write new books for an established series. Ghostwriters using a pseudonym purportedly write fictional books like Nancy Drew. Some authors may hire a ghostwriter to continue writing works under their name after their death.
Politicians and public officials have large volumes of correspondence and replying to them all can become difficult. Their involvement varies, based on many factors. In most cases however, the high-ranking official is presented with a draft done by a ghostwriter. He may request changes or reviewing of the content after which he may approve and sign the final copy. Other services of a ghost worker may involve writing speeches, public remarks or addresses. Newer forms of ghost writing include writing blogs for people and updating them frequently. Ghostwriters will evidently continue to be used in the future to perform work that original writers feel they cannot finish.
