With more and more layoffs, more and more people are looking for a job or a new one to replace the shaky one they already have. This means the competition is fierce and it’s up to you to do all you can to become more apparent to the ones reviewing hundreds of applications daily. Recruiting departments will tell you most of the applications end up in the trash. Only those that have amazing cover letters actually get through to the next stage, the first interview.
That first interview is where you want to be. That is where you can actually show them what a good candidate you are for the position. Unfortunately, most people never get to this stage because they didn’t realize that it wasn’t that craftily written resume that you paid hundreds of dollars for, it was the cover letter that either broke the deal or got you in. It is that smart person that realizes that that cover letter is their only chance to really make an impression to get their foot in the door for that first interview.
Common cover letters contain only a small amount of information about the writer, just enough words to call it a letter and a small pitiful plea at the end to ask to be called for an interview. This is a really big mistake that almost 99% of the people do when looking for a job. This is where you can stand out and make yourself known. Take some time to find out a little about the company. Let them know that you really do want this job. Then sell yourself.
A well-written resume is a must. But realize that this is not what is going to get you in the door. A resume simply shows the reader that you are qualified to actually do the job you are applying for. It doesn’t bring you out as a unique individual, confidently seeking the position that they have. Knowing that you can fill the position with no question, and do it well.
It is the cover letter that will show them who you are and how your qualifications meet the needs of the job. It can also show how well you will be able to meld with the other employees in the company. Well over 95% of the applications received are lacking this sort of introduction. With so many equally qualified applicants, don’t you want to be the one they can’t wait to bring in and interview before someone else sweeps you up?
